Composition
I am a performer and composer. The two acts, playing and composing, are really two sides of the same coin. I encourage my students at all levels to compose their own music, and offer the tools required to do so. My beginning students learn to write their own melodies, often with their own lyrics. Some of my advanced students are professional singer-songwriters, and I help them enhance the connection between their piano and guitar playing to their lyrics and singing. Other are interested in electronic music and beat making, which requires an understanding of musical structure and development. My students have written piano and guitar pieces, rock, pop, hip-hop and jazz songs, and even scored films!
